چکیده
Abstract In the past, students' participation in science competitions has been positively associated with their aspirations to pursue a career science. Previous studies, however, were predominantly focused around successful competitors, overlooking largest group of participants: those who are faced early elimination. We therefore aimed investigate effects elimination on development biology‐related study and task values expectancy success first‐round participants German Biology Olympiad ( N = 381, mean age 16.5 years, 72% female). This was first its kind use latent change score model approach examine elimination, particular focus placed great emphasis succeeding competition. found that, regardless or failure, participants' value remained stable from second round competition, while studies developed positively. Yet, for importance advancing interfered expectations, resulting weaker development. The outcomes this suggest that (1) should re‐envision themselves more directly address about careers, especially earlier competition rounds, (2) find innovative ways provide detailed feedback students teachers improve post‐elimination performance. Our findings complement existing expectancy‐value research can serve as starting point future exploring mechanisms behind different domains cultural contexts, providing empirical insight into creating an inclusive supportive environment all competitors.

Career aspirations and attainment RUNNING HEAD: CAREER ASPIRATIONS AND ATTAINMENT
In this paper we examine the associations between gender, family background, general cognitive ability (g) and career aspirations at early age, and career attainment in mid adulthood drawing on two large representative samples of the British population born in 1958 (N = 6,474) and in 1970 (N = 5,081). A developmental-contextual model of career development is tested in both age cohorts, using St...
